スピーチコンテスト、スピーチコンテストと言っている間に７月が終わってしまいました。気がつけば、来週の水曜日はもう中間テスト。早いものですね。中間テストが終わって採点しているうちに夏休みが来て、バス旅行に行って、そして、あっという間に期末テスト…っていうのが今学期これからです。
腰を落ち着けて勉強している暇がないように見えるかもしれませんが、受験シーズンは歩みを止めてくれませんから、教師としては学生が勉強できるように最大限の配慮をしていかなければなりません。学生の皆さんには、回りをよく見渡して、取り残されることのないようにしてもらいたいです。
今日の最上級クラスは、外山滋比古（とやましげひこ）さんの『思考の整理学』を取り上げました。この本の中で外山さんは、単に物事を記憶するだけならコンピューターのもできるが、覚えたことの中から選択的に忘れることは人間しかできない、と述べています。この「忘却の大切さ」について、いろいろと話し合いました。何をどう忘れるかによって個性が生まれる、上手に忘れることによって、新しいことが取り入れられる――学生はこんなことを言ってくれました。
東京は梅雨明けは早かったのですが、夏らしい日があまり多くなく、なんとなくスカッとしません。今年はエルニーニョ現象で、冷夏のおそれがあるとのことです。勉強するには暑くなりすぎないのでいいのかもしれませんが、暑くない夏というのは、寂しいものがあります。留学生の入学試験は秋が勝負というところが多いですから、いずれにしても、この夏をいかに乗り切るかで泣くか笑うかが見えてきます。
